🎥 Amend NJ Film Tax Incentives To Include Indie Filmmakers
The Issue
The vibrant and creative indie filmmaking community in New Jersey is suffering under the current state film tax incentive program. As a passionate indie filmmaker based in New Jersey, it's disheartening to see that the existing program is largely inaccessible to us due to its minimum requirement of $1 million in qualified expenses.
The Problem: Only Mega-Studios Benefit Currently
As it currently stands, the program favors union mega-studios like Netflix and Lions Gate, who are currently building, can easily meet the high financial thresholds, leaving local, grassroots, and non-union creators in the shadows.
This exclusion doesn't just stifle creativity, it limits economic growth and opportunity among New Jersey's local talented independent storytelling filmmakers, actors, and hard-working crews. The state's existing vibrant creative community is a critical component of its cultural identity and deserves the chance to thrive, contribute, and be recognized. Independent filmmakers with budgets under $1 million are left without the necessary support to produce their art and share their unique stories.
The Solution: Tiered Tax Credit Amendment
Introducing a tiered tax credit amendment catering specifically to indie films with smaller budgets will empower New Jersey's indie film ecosystem. Such a reform will allow more local filmmakers to participate in the economy, thus creating meaningful job opportunities for working-class residents in the region. Additionally, such a change can help diversify the types of stories told and talent featured on screen, ensuring a rich tapestry of narratives that reflect New Jersey's diverse population.
Production Budget $ & Proposed Tax Credit %
$1K – $4,999 10%
$5K – $19,999 12%
$20K – $49,999 15%
$50K – $199,999 17%
$200K – $499,999 20%
$500K – $999,999 25%
Currently, only certain qualifying 1 million+ production budgets can get up to 40% tax credits.
By championing a fair chance for local, low-budget filmmakers, we can ignite a creative renaissance in our state that supports our artists and boosts our economy. This change is not just an investment in film production, but an investment in our local culture, people, and their potential.
Let's create a future where all of New Jersey's filmmakers, regardless of their financial backing, can thrive.
✍️ Sign this petition now to call on New Jersey lawmakers to amend the film tax incentive to include a tiered credit system for indie films under $1 million.
