Amend New Zealand Law for Child Fatal Abuse/ Murders

Amend New Zealand Law for Child Fatal Abuse/ Murders

The issue

As a concerned citizen of New Zealand, I am deeply troubled by the lack of justice for our innocent children who are victims of fatal abuse. Too often, adults present at the time of these heinous acts remain silent, leaving law enforcement unable to charge anyone. This must change. Our sentencing outcomes for any fatal abuse/murder of a child are not justice for these children. This must change.

When a child's life is tragically cut short due to fatal abuse/murder and multiple adults were present but refuse to speak out about what happened, it leaves us with an alarming justice gap.

We propose a legal amendment that if police cannot determine who among multiple adults present during a child's fatal abuse/murder is responsible due to their collective silence or refusal to tell the truth, all should be charged and face appropriate sentencing. That the maximum sentencing for any fatal abuse/murder of a healthy child be life imprisonment with a non-parole period of the remaining life expectancy of that child.

In our country, the average life expectancy is approximately 82 years. Maximum sentencing in a "silence circumstance" should be that each person should be sentenced to the remaining years the child should have lived going off our average life expectancy in New Zealand divided by the number of adults charged. Example a 2yr old fatal abuse/murder and 4 adults charged = 20.5years each in prison without parole for a fatal outcome. If it is abuse without death the same law change is to be applied in these situations of silence with a lesser but severe consequence/sentencing.

This proposed amendment aims not only for justice but also as a deterrent against such horrific crimes in the future. It sends out a strong message that silence in the face of child abuse will not be tolerated and those choosing it will face severe consequences.

Our children deserve better protection under our laws; they deserve justice when their lives are brutally taken away from them too soon. Join us in urging lawmakers in New Zealand to consider this crucial amendment - sign this petition today!
