Amend Laws Governing Restricted Dog Breeds in Council Houses

The Issue

Like many, I am a loving and responsible pet owner. I also happen to be a council tenant. Currently, our laws unjustly categorize and restrict certain dog breeds from council houses. This is not only unfair, but it also tragically leads to the unnecessary euthanasia of dogs who have been waiting to find a loving home.

It is widely acknowledged that breed is not an accurate predictor of a dog’s character – in fact, numerous studies have demonstrated this. The American Veterinary Medical Association, for instance, asserts that breed-specific laws fail to enhance public safety and often lead to needless and expensive animal control legislation (AVMA, 2014).

This outdated, discriminatory legislation needs to change. It is a stark reflection of our society that we routinely judge certain breeds and people in council homes. It is inherently dangerous when evidence suggests that responsible ownership and public education hold the key to reducing dog attacks and fostering harmonious relationships between pets and people.

The adjustment of these laws can create a brighter future for numerous dogs, and open up possibilities for good-hearted people living in council houses to provide these dogs a loving home. Remember, these are animals that may otherwise be destroyed if not given the opportunity to be adopted.

We are requesting that council restrictions on certain dog breeds be reviewed and reconsidered, with a shift in focus to responsible dog ownership and training, rather than breed-specific legislation.
