The Issue

My Mother's experience in a local Nursing Home Facility has turned my attention towards a pressing issue in Ohio's nursing homes. My Mother, a dementia resident, was frequently reported to have fallen, leading to black eyes. Concerned for her wellbeing, my family and I decided to install a Ring Camera to monitor her care. Since then, there have been no more falls or injuries, but what we observed instead was shocking – staff neglecting essential patient care.

Patients, including my mother, were often left without proper showers, had pullups/diapers unchanged, and were kept sitting in dining areas all night to prevent them from moving around. The lack of dignified care was harrowing, with incidents of staff yelling at and pushing patients.

This painful ordeal has highlighted a critical requirement: the amendment of Esther's Law to mandate that all Nursing Homes in Ohio provide Internet/WiFi access to families for Electronic Monitoring Devices. The current limitation on internet access prevents families from ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their loved ones who are vulnerable and dependent on the care of these facilities.

Statistics show that over 70% of nursing homes in the U.S. are understaffed (source: the New York Times), increasing the likelihood of neglect. By allowing electronic monitoring, families can oversee the care provided to their loved ones, acting as an additional layer of oversight.

Amending Esther's Law to require WiFi access is a realistic and actionable solution to ensure elderly residents in Ohio receive the standard of care they deserve. This change will not only help prevent neglect but will also promote transparency and accountability in the care system.

Let us come together to advocate for this vital amendment to protect our parents, grandparents, and all residents in nursing homes. Sign this petition to make a difference and bring about necessary change in Ohio's nursing home regulations. Together, we can make our voices heard.
