The Issue

In our vibrant and growing state of Connecticut, there's a pressing need to empower our citizens. We believe that democracy is strongest when those in power are directly accountable to the communities they serve. We need to shift more power to our people and communities, and one crucial way to achieve this is through a Constitutional Amendment that allows for citizen ballot initiatives and petitions.

Connecticut's current legislative process doesn't adequately reflect the immediate needs and desires of its citizens. Unlike many other states, our Constitution does not allow residents to directly propose changes to laws or even the Constitution itself. This lack of direct democracy mechanisms can leave communities like ours feeling disempowered and disconnected from the political process.

By enabling citizen ballot initiatives and petitions, we provide a pathway for residents to propose and vote on laws and amendments that directly affect their lives. In doing so, we ensure that our state's laws are aligned with the values and needs of its people, fostering a more engaged and motivated citizenry. This change will not only reflect our community's values more accurately but will also bridge the gap between government actions and public needs.

According to data from the National Conference of State Legislatures, 24 states in the United States already have processes in place for citizen-initiated ballot measures. These states have shown how empowering citizens can lead to more responsive and representative governance. Empirical evidence suggests that such measures can lead to increased voter turnout and more civic engagement in the political process.

We urge our fellow citizens, local leaders, and Connecticut's legislative body to consider the benefits of adopting citizen ballot initiatives and the positive impact they would have on our state's democracy. Together, we can foster a more inclusive and participative political environment in Connecticut.

Join us in our effort to amend our state's Constitution to include citizen ballot initiatives. Sign this petition to bring about meaningful change and strengthen our democracy. Your signature can help us take a step towards a Connecticut where every voice counts and every individual has the power to make a difference. Sign the petition today!
