The issue

Year 13 students at Papanui High School were previously allowed to wear non-uniform clothing, a privilege that empowered us as we transition towards adulthood. However, a new decision mandates that starting from 2026, Year 13 students must wear school uniforms. This decision was made without adequately considering the overwhelming opinion expressed by the students in a school survey conducted last year, where most of us disagreed with enforcing uniforms.

We are seen as young adults in Year 13, standing on the brink of stepping into the broader world. Having the option to dress professionally in attire of our choice prepares us for the autonomy expected in workplaces and further studies, while also respecting our individuality and freedom of expression.

Numerous studies highlight the importance of self-expression in developing mature and responsible individuals. Allowing the choice of uniform or non-uniform is not only about clothing but also about fostering a respectful environment where students feel heard and valued. Let's say every Year 13 students wear non-uniform in 2026 on the first day of school. Staff members and higher ups will not be able to punish every single student because there are too many. Doesn't this sound like a good idea? ;)

However, some students may disagree with this and I completely understand. But it would be better if Papanui High School made a choice for Year 13's with their attire to school, whether they want to wear uniform to school or not. That way, both sides will be happy and have the freedom to wear whatever they'd like.

By signing this petition, you will help uphold the spirit of Papanui High School—a community that listens to its students and empowers them to grow into confident adults. Let's reach out to the school board to reconsider their decision and acknowledge the voices of those they serve.

Help us bring back the choice. Sign our petition to support the freedom and individuality of Year 13 students at Papanui High School.
