Thousands of women find themselves trapped after separation, unable to revert back to their maiden names until a divorce is finalised. Some may wish to do so due to personal reasons or to distance themselves emotionally from a painful chapter of their life. However, the present legal procedures make it compulsory to seek their spouse's permission before the finalisation of the divorce. This petition seeks a change in the law which makes it possible for a woman who is legally separated, but whose divorce has not yet been finalised, to revert to her maiden name without needing her spouse's approval. This change would treat women as equal citizens, enhance personal autonomy, and respect the individuals' right to their personal identity.
