Allow Student Nurses to Wear Scrubs During Extreme Heat + Provide University Issued scrubs
The Issue
The Student Nurses of UOG respectfully request that the University review and amend its uniform policy to permit student nurses to wear appropriate clinical scrubs during periods of extreme heat and to consider providing recognisable university-issued nursing scrubs for all nursing students.
The current UK heatwave has created challenging conditions for students attending placements, skills sessions, and university-based clinical activities. Traditional tunics issues by the university can become extremely uncomfortable and impractical during periods of high temperatures, hugely impacting students' wellbeing, concentration, and ability to perform safely and effectively in clinical environment.
Allowing student nurses to wear lightweight, professional scrubs would provide several important benefits:
- Improved Health and Wellbeing
- Patient Safety
- Professional Identity (when issued by the university)
- Alignment with Current Clinical Practice
Lightweight scrubs will reduce our risk of heat exhaustion, overheating and discomfort, increasing our ability to focus on providing the best possible care for our patients while in practice.
We therefore ask the University of Gloucestershire to consider:
- Introducing an immediate temporary exemption allowing student nurses to wear approved clinical scrubs during periods of extreme heat.
- Conduct a review of the current nursing uniform policy with student consultation.
- Explore the provision of official university-branded nursing scrubs that clearly identify students while maintaining professional standards.
- Ensure any revised uniform policy prioritises student wellbeing, safety, professionalism, and inclusivity.
As future registered nurses keeping in line with the NMC codes of practice (2018), we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and patient care. We believe that adapting uniform requirements during extreme weather conditions is a reasonable, practical, and evidence-based step that supports both student welfare and safe clinical practice.
