The issue

At All Saints College, self-expression is a value we hold dear, yet there exists a discrepancy in how it is embraced within our community. As a student, I have observed a double standard that puts a hold  on our ability to freely express ourselves through jewellery, multiple piercings, and unnatural hair colours. While our teachers are permitted to showcase these elements of personal style, students face restrictions, limiting our creativity and individuality.

Self-expression is a vital part of our identity and growth, especially during our school years. It allows us to convey who we are beyond academics and uniforms, helping to build confidence, acceptance, and a sense of belonging. The suppression of this form of expression only serves to stifle our creativity and individuality, creating an environment that doesn't reflect the diverse world we live in. Some may argue that maintaining a uniform appearance fosters discipline and equality. However, true discipline and equality are about encouraging respect and understanding among all individuals regardless of their appearance. Allowing students the same freedom of expression as teachers exemplifies these values far more.

I urge the administration at All Saints College to reconsider the current dress code policies. Let's create guidelines that respect individual choices while maintaining the dignity and decorum of our educational environment. Specific measures, like permitting jewellery, multiple piercings, and off-norm hair colours, can be introduced with clear boundaries to ensure harmony and mutual respect.

Together, we can make All Saints College a beacon of diversity and progressive education. Join me in advocating for this change. Sign this petition to support the right to self-expression for students.
