The Issue

In today's fast-paced world, communication is more crucial than ever, especially for students and their families. Not being able to contact a parent or other family member during school hours has been frustrating and, although it hasn’t happened to me, it could potentially endanger many students who might need immediate assistance. This is why I find the current law prohibiting the use of phones in New York schools not only unnecessary but potentially dangerous.

The benefits of allowing phones in schools extend far beyond just communication between students and their families. They offer invaluable educational resources, enabling access to information at the touch of a button. Students could not only use them to communicate but also to research, collaborate, and explore new learning tools to enhance their educational experience. Schools across the state could leverage this technology to prepare students for the digital landscape they will face beyond the classroom.

Many other states have successfully implemented policies that permit phone usage under certain guidelines, ensuring that the educational environment is not disrupted. For instance, allowing phone usage during non-instructional times or for educational purposes not only supports learning but also maintains classroom focus. We believe New York can adopt similar measures that safeguard both educational integrity and student safety.

Furthermore, from a safety perspective, having a phone is critical. Students need to be able to reach their parents in emergencies or receive instant updates about events that might affect their journey home, such as severe weather conditions or unexpected schedule changes.

This petition is about modernizing our approach to education and acknowledging the role of technology in our lives without compromising on security and effectiveness. The safety and educational prosperity of New York students depend on this adaptation.

I urge the New York State Education Department and local school boards to reassess the current ban on phones in schools and to implement a more flexible policy that reflects the needs of today’s students and their families. Please sign this petition to support a change that enhances communication, learning, and safety for all students in the State of New York.
