The Issue

A few years ago, our principal tragically lost their life in a shooting incident. This traumatic event sparked a deep-rooted fear and concern among students and parents in Pinellas Park. We worry about the dangers of not having our phones on us throughout the school day, especially during emergencies.

Imagine if an emergency unfolds, like in the bathrooms or hallways, and students have no immediate way to contact authorities or their parents. The inability to access our phones could delay urgent help during critical situations. Emergencies at home should not go unaddressed either; parents should be able to reach their children during school hours.

Moreover, statistics have shown that in school shooting incidents, it is often the students who bravely call 911 to alert authorities. According to Everytown Research, there have been at least 101 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in 2023 alone. This underscores the importance of students having immediate access to their mobile phones for their personal safety and the safety of their peers.

We propose that Pinellas Park schools amend their policies to permit students to carry their phones during school hours. It would offer an added layer of safety, with students able to swiftly communicate with authorities or family members in emergent situations.

Join us in urging school administrators to consider this policy change for the safety and well-being of all students. Sign this petition to make our voices heard and enhance the security measures in our schools.
