Allow koalas to return home to Stradbroke Island after treatment on the mainland
The issue
Flinders was a vibrant young koala, full of life, residing in the lush habitats of Stradbroke Island. Tragically, he was struck by a car and whisked away to the mainland for emergency veterinary care. With time, Flinders made a full yearning to return to his beloved home. However, his story took a sorrowful turn when he was denied permission to return to the island, his home, by the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) and Department of Environment and Tourism (DETS). In a desperate attempt to return, Flinders made several distressing journeys across unfamiliar terrain and was eventually discovered deceased along the shoreline. This heartbreaking outcome speaks to a decision that needs urgent reconsideration.
Koalas are iconic residents of Stradbroke Island, and their natural instinct drives them to return to the place they originate from. The current regulations, which prevent rehabilitated koalas from being safely rehomed back on Stradbroke Island, lack compassion and understanding of their natural behaviors. While emergency treatment on the mainland is critical for survival, these animals deserve the opportunity to come back to their rightful homes at the earliest.
There is a pressing need to revisit the policies enforced by QYAC and DES that currently hinder koalas from returning post-rehabilitation. Revising these regulations to prioritize the safe return of koalas will not only honor their innate instincts but will also contribute to maintaining the ecological balance and biodiversity that Stradbroke Island is proud of.
It's essential to establish a transparent and collaborative effort that includes wildlife experts, local authorities, indigenous landowners, and the community to ensure that these animals' needs are respected and addressed. The implementation of an official wildlife return protocol should be explored. This protocol should be based on scientific evidence and welfare considerations that enable koalas to transition back to their habitats smoothly.
Let's join hands to urge QYAC and DES to revise their policies, allowing rehabilitated koalas to return to their natural homes. Together, we can prevent further tragedies and ensure that koalas like Flinders are honored and respected by allowing them to live freely and safely in the places they call home.
Please sign this petition to bring awareness and prompt a change that is not only needed but is simply humane. Together, our voices can make a difference for the koalas of Stradbroke Island.
