We, the students of Pedare, would like to amend the uniform policy to allow female students to wear pants as part of the winter uniform instead of the traditional skirt.

All those who have signed the attached petition believe the current skirt is impractical, uncomfortable and discriminating. The skirts restrict movement and often slide around the waist, and the stockings or socks worn underneath do not retain heat well, making the uniform feel cold and exposing for female students. Many students feel that pants offer benefits over skirts, as they are a comfortable unisex item of clothing which completely cover the legs.

Many schools both around Australia and within South Australia have allowed girls to wear pants, promoting both freedom of choice and gender equality. These schools have noticed no adverse effects of allowing female students to wear pants, and found that the uniform transition was straightforward.

The proposed change: allow girls to wear pants, similar to or the same as the pants worn with the boys' winter uniform. This solution is not only aesthetically appealing, but also promotes Pedare as a professional and open-minded establishment, which allows females freedom of choice.
