I come from a small Village in Homabay County called Kosoko. In this village, teenage pregnancy has affected almost every household. You cannot go by three homesteads without pointing to a young teenage mother who has either dropped out of school or married off at a tender age and is struggling to raise a child amidst object poverty.

Apart from their dead or delayed dreams/ambitions, these young girls are exposed to risk of  birth complications, HIV/AIDS infection, postpartum depression, and GBV.

For either cultural reasons or lack information, most parents are also unable to talk to their children about sex resulting in skewed or biased information from sex predators targeting these minors.

Teenage pregnancy is not just a menace in my community, It's a scourge in the Kenyan for instance,  In 2020, the government recorded a total of 151, 000 teenage pregnancy cases in just 6 months.

For gender parity to be realized, the girls and the boys must be taught about risky sexual behaviours so that they know what to expect should they decide to be involved in early sexual encounters. Proper information will also deter adult sexual predators from taking advantage of the young girls.

Please join me in appealing to the Cabinet Secretary for Education to include Comprehensive Sex Education into School Curriculum.

Age-appropriate concrete information on sexuality will not only ensure that these young boys and girls live a healthy lives and grow to become responsible adults but also give them the power necessary to take control of their lives and their future.
