The issue

My son is about to start Year 10 at St Andrew's Catholic College, an important stage in his academic journey where Health and Physical Education (HPE) is no longer a core subject. Consequently, the only physical activity he, alongside his peers, gets during school hours is through playing sports like basketball and football during break times. Despite the fun and health benefits of such activities, he has frequently returned home with sore feet and knees, and has even suffered from rolled ankles on several occasions. The culprit? The inflexible black leather school shoes that are part of the mandatory formal uniform.

Allowing students to wear black leather runners with their formal school uniform would alleviate these physical discomforts and prevent further injuries. Black leather runners provide the necessary support, flexibility, and comfort to engage in physical activities without compromising the formal aesthetic of the school uniform. This change would directly benefit students' well-being and enthusiasm for participating in sports during breaks, which is vital for their overall health and fitness.

The current uniform policy does not account for the physical strain imposed by traditional school shoes during unsupervised and informal play. Students, especially those in higher grades, need footwear that sustains both their academic and physical activities. Black leather runners can provide a practical solution without diminishing the school's standard of formality, as they are visually similar and maintain the required appearance.

Making this simple yet significant modification to the uniform policy will not only improve daily comfort for students but also encourage a more active lifestyle. It ensures that the school's dress code aligns better with the health needs of its students, showing a commitment to their safety and well-being.

We urge St Andrew’s Catholic College to reconsider and update their uniform policy to include black leather runners as an option with the formal uniform. By signing this petition, you support a practical change that promotes student health and engagement in necessary physical activities. Join us in advocating for this positive development!
