Allow Australians Early Access to Superannuation During the Cost-of-Living Crisis

Allow Australians Early Access to Superannuation During the Cost-of-Living Crisis
The issue
Like many Australians, I am currently ineligible for Centrelink support - yet despite submitting hundreds of job applications over the past three months, I remain unable to find work and am left without an income. The financial pressure is relentless: rent, fuel, and groceries are stretching beyond reach, and there is no safety net in sight.
I am not alone. Across our country, hardworking Australians are being crushed by rising inflation, skyrocketing fuel costs, and a cost-of-living crisis that shows no signs of easing. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s own data confirms these are among the steepest household cost increases in recent memory.
I am calling on the Australian Government to allow a one-time, voluntary withdrawal of up to $10,000 from superannuation funds for eligible Australians experiencing financial hardship at this time.
This is not a proposal to undermine retirement savings; it is an acknowledgement that survival today cannot be sacrificed at the altar of future security. Australians should never have to choose between keeping a roof over their heads and protecting their super.
This measure would:
- Provide immediate relief to individuals, families and small businesses facing acute financial distress
- Reduce pressure on welfare and social services which are already stretched to capacity
- Stimulate local economies through increased community spending
- Empower Australians to weather this crisis with dignity
We have seen emergency super access work before. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government acted decisively to give Australians access to their own money when they needed it most. The same leadership is needed now.
Sign this petition and urge the Australian Government to act. Together, we can push for a commonsense, compassionate solution that puts people before policy; and ensures no Australian is left behind.
