All Inclusive and All Abilities recreational space for our Macleay Island Community Park

All Inclusive and All Abilities recreational space for our Macleay Island Community Park
The issue
Many of our public spaces on Macleay Island, including parks and playgrounds, need re-designing as they do not meet the current needs of our community.
The Macleay Island Community Park (Skate Park) is limited to who can use this recreational space. This excludes those who may not have the same physical abilities as their friends and / or families due to aging, disability or other factors. This disparity not only marginalises people with different abilities but also excludes them from crucial social and developmental experiences. All members of our community have the right to use their public spaces.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2024), 5.5 million Australians (21.4%) are living with a disability. This signifies that in our community alone, a significant number of individuals are prevented from fully participating in community activities. It's time for us to review and re-design our Community Park space to be all inclusive, accommodating all ages and abilities, so everyone in our community can interact together. We believe this is a necessary step toward achieving inclusivity in our community. Inclusivity will help strengthen our diverse and culturally rich community, promote health and well-being, and overall allow everyone to enjoy this wonderful space.
The MI Community Park Working Group are asking our local council to reconsider the design of this public space to cater to all, not just some. By signing this petition, you support the implementation of an all inclusive and all abilities recreational space for our Macleay Island Community Park.
