Save Steller Sea Lions!

The Issue

In 1956, there were roughly 250,000 Steller sea lions in Alaska. It rose to a maximum of about 282,000 in the mid 1970s. Since 1980 it has decreased by over 70% (roughly 5% per year) to about 42,000 Steller sea lions in 2000. In the year 1989, the population decline of these animals appear to have slowed down significantly within the eastern Aleutians and the western Gulf of Alaska. However, the population of these pinnipeds is still currently decreasing and we need your help to prevent fisheries from competing for food with these sea lions in their habitat. Increases have been occurring in the smaller populations of southeast Alaska but action must still be taken to ensure Steller sea lions their survival. Sign this petition to help work with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to stop/restrict the fishing of Pollock in Steller sea lion regions.
