Against exotic wild animals in the living room - Positive List NOW!
The Issue
Lion escaped? It's not a unique case!
The alleged lioness in Berlin caused a stir in international media. But did you know that exotic pets escape all the time? Even lions and monkeys! The European animal welfare organization AAP took in lion cubs Elsa and Marley a few years ago, who were found in a parking lot in Saxony-Anhalt. Although their discovery generated a lot of media attention, the real problem of legally keeping a lion as a pet remained untouched. Their owner had taken care of nothing: The lion siblings lived locked up in a room for weeks. Here, they had hardly any space to move around and could not develop any natural behaviour. AAP tries to save as many animals as possible. But every year, more exotic animals end up in wretched conditions.
No control = No problem?
Lions, tigers, chimpanzees, and other exotic animals do not belong in the living room. This is the opinion of 81% of Germans, according to a survey of over 1000 people. 90% of the participants also favour stronger regulations on the trade of exotic animals. Now is the perfect opportunity, as the German government is revising the Animal Protection Act. We must act now or wait at least another five or ten years for the necessary changes. That is why we appeal to the federal government: introduce a positive list for pets now!
There are currently no uniform laws in Germany for many exotic pets. Many states have independent bans, but they differ significantly: In Berlin, lions are banned as pets. In neighboring Brandenburg, on the other hand, they may be kept without any problems. But an escaped lion does not care about the state borders.
Other EU countries had similar problems and were able to solve them with positive lists for pets. It is high time that we, too, end the irresponsible keeping of exotic animals and put the protection of animals, the environment, and people first.
What is a positive list?
The positive list for pets is a collection of approved pet species. Independent experts decide which animals can be kept without risk and include them in the positive list. These risk assessments are based on objective criteria that can account for animal welfare, public health, and safety or biodiversity.
