Across Mississippi, there are countless grandparents fighting to obtain due recognition and protection for their rights in legal matters related to their grandchildren. Currently, legal standards in Mississippi can make it challenging for grandparents to access their rights, particularly in situations involving custody or visitation rights. Evidence shows that the role of grandparents in a child's life can be immensely beneficial to their well-being and development, with a study from the American Sociological Association stating that "involved grandparents positively influence grandchildren's wellbeing" (American Sociological Review, 2012). As it stands, grandparents' rights in Mississippi remain precariously inadequate. We call on Mississippi lawmakers to take immediate action to acknowledge and reinforce these rights.
