Advocate for hate crime bill to protect Black Americans from cyberbullying

The Issue

Every time I log onto social media to share my thoughts on Black history, slavery, reparations, or even just my daily life, I brace myself for an onslaught of hateful comments. These aren't just random mean comments; they are targeted, race-based, filled with venom and the ugliness of racial slurs like 'n***er,' aimed directly at Black Americans who dare to speak up. The digital world is supposed to be a platform for discussion and expression, yet for us, it becomes a battlefield. When I go live on TikTok to advocate for reparations, I'm immediately met with a barrage of derogatory terms meant to belittle and silence me. It's not just me—this happens to countless Black Americans.

Our voices are systematically drowned out by hate. We are mocked for the legacies and negative outcomes of Jim Crow laws and slavery, and whenever we try to report the hate, it feels like shouting into an abyss. Instead of constructive discourse, we face hostility and intolerance, which forces many in our community to limit their engagement on social media or turn off comments altogether. This is not fair; it pushes us into silence.

This constant barrage of mental and emotional abuse is more than just hurtful—it's dangerous. The mental trauma inflicted by such relentless hate is damaging to the mental health of our community, particularly our children, who should not have to grow up in fear of expressing their identity online.

We need to implement a hate crime bill that specifically addresses cyberbullying against Black Americans. It is urgent that we protect the mental and emotional wellbeing of our community. This bill should impose strict penalties for online hate crimes and mandate social media platforms to take decisive action against racial harassment.

Black Americans deserve to be protected, both on and off social media. Our voices matter, our experiences matter, and our history should not be silenced by those attempting to assault us with hate. Join me in advocating for this necessary legislation to protect our rights and our communities. Please sign this petition and help us demand the protection we need and deserve.
