Add Digital & Technical Skills to Secondary Schools Curriculum

The Issue

Unemployment, a major challenge facing the nation. Federal government through several administrations both past and present had done their bit to curtail it, yet the number keeps increasing linearly upward.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the labour population covers all persons aged 15 to 64 years who are willing and able to work regardless of whether or not they have a job.

According to Statista, an online data company noted that from the labour force population, the unemployment rate has been estimated to hit 33% in 2022 as against 32.5% in 2021.

The BIG QUESTION!

In 2030, what will be the shape of this data on the graph? Is it going to appreciate upward or depreciate downward?

For this purpose, I call on the attention of the Federal government through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology to look into this case in a different dimension.

It is on note that the type of education being given to students in schools starting from secondary to tertiary is a type that prepares their mindset to be labourers, and not the form that prepares them to create labour's.

This system of education forced Nigeria as a nation to be just consumers of inventions and innovations from other countries during the first, second and third industrial revolutions. Now here comes the fourth industrial revolution and soon there will emerge the fifth industrial revolution.

Now is the right time to act. Taking Nigeria from a consumptive economy to an innovative and productive economy.

....to achieve this which leads to solving the problem of unemployment, STEM (Science, Technology Engineering Mathematics) and STI(Science Technology and Innovation) skills should be offered to students at the secondary and tertiary levels to prepare them to be able to solve various national, continental and global challenges using STEM and STI skills. This skill upon completion or graduation from the various stages of academics will prepare them to be creators of jobs and also prepare them to have meaningful skills required to succeed in the future and to be gainfully employed having acquired the needed 21st century skills.

it is a well-known fact that Africa's in general and Nigeria's in particular economic prospects are being constrained due to shortage of digital and technological skills in many sectors across the state and continents, hence the need for youths of the country and the region to be properly equipped with STEM and STI skills, and this process should begin at the secondary and tertiary institutions.

If this is implemented by the Federal government; by the year 2030, the unemployment rate will be reduced to the barest minimum.

For this reason I am inviting well meaning Nigerians and Africans to help me sign this petition for the Federal government to enforce digital and technical skills acquisition in the school's curriculum. This will save Nigeria's future and Africa at large.
