Add a middle school baseball division to Augusta Rec League
The Issue
We have no baseball for kids after 6th grade. There are many kids that want to play but cant afford travel ball. Right now we have 9,10,11,12 all playing together. We have people going to other towns because of this. I think a Middle School division could help this problem. They always say kids stop playing at 13. We cant change this if we dont even give them a chance to play.
Growing up, baseball was more than just a game to me; it was a way of life. It taught me discipline, teamwork, and gave me confidence. However, not every child in Augusta is lucky enough to experience the joy and camaraderie that baseball brings due to financial constraints. Many families cannot afford the high costs associated with travel baseball teams, and this financial barrier prevents their children from playing the sport they love.
Our community is blessed with incredible young talent, and it's heartbreaking to see these kids lose out on opportunities simply because of monetary limitations. Introducing a middle school baseball division in the Augusta Rec League would provide a platform for these youngsters to develop their skills, make new friends, and engage in healthy competition.
According to a study by the Aspen Institute, the average cost of participating in travel baseball ranges from $3,700 to $8,300 annually, a sum that is simply inaccessible for many families. By offering a local and affordable alternative, we can keep children active and off the streets, and help foster a love for the game without financial burden.
This division would not only be a beacon of hope for these athletes but would also serve to strengthen our community, promote inclusivity, and support the development of youth sports in Augusta. City recreation leagues should be accessible to everyone, regardless of economic status, and adding this division is a big step in the right direction.
