Act NOW to assist in the Fight against Fish Substitution

The issue

Application to amend the Standard Name of Percophis brasiliensis (currently South American Flathead)

This needs YOUR support......

The Australian Fish Names Committee (FNC), in accordance with its approved Standards Development policies and procedures, discussed the application at meeting FNC45 in Hobart on 10th September 2024. The FNC agreed that the application proceed to public consultation, with the proposed name of South American Duckbill.
Public comment started Wednesday November 27th 2024. The public consultation will be open for more than the required 60 days, with a proposed end date of February 18th 2025.
People in Australia can now have their say and get the decision ratified by the FNC,  BUT only if you take a few moments to link to the connection below and vote in support of the name change.

The work has been done - the details have been provided and a decision will be reached. YOUR vote to support the name change is ESSENTIAL.

If we do nothing we are saying that we support being misled about the product we believe we have paid for so now is the time to make a strong statement about this issue.

Flathead is a staple item in all aspects of Australian culinary forms - it is a wonderful fish. There is nothing wrong with South American Percophis brasiliensis but when retailers/cafes/pubs/hotels, etc fail to be transparent and try to sell you the product as Flathead instead of South American Flathead then they are misrepresenting the product, they are cheating their customers - Yes YOU! By changing the name of the imported product to South American Duckbill it will go a long way to ensure that the consumer will get more transparency and get what they are paying for.
