This petition began as many do, through personal trauma. The instigator of this appeal tragically lost their mother whilst waiting for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to complete an investigation. What should have taken only 12 months resulted in a painful 5-year ordeal. This petition aims to ensure no other family has to undergo such distress due to prolonged processes.

The NMC plays a significant role in our healthcare system, ensuring accountability and professionalism in the nursing sector. However, their lengthy investigation times can have devastating effects on the lives of not only the nurses involved but also their families.

In light of our tragic experience, we demand an expedited review process from the NMC, offering the necessary support to nurses caught up in these cases. We also call for increased transparency in the investigation timings, allowing families like ours to plan and cope with the situation.

According to a 2019 report by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, lengthy investigations and delays in resolving complaints cause avoidable harm to patients and professionals. This endorses the need for reform and acceleration in the NMC investigation procedure.
