The Issue

Arkansas students like myself are facing an unexpected barrier to our high school graduation—75 mandatory volunteer hours as required by the LEARNS ACT. This hurdle affects many of my classmates who lack access to reliable transportation, making it incredibly difficult for them to fulfill these hours. Without meeting this requirement, we risk being denied our diplomas, despite our relentless effort throughout our years of schooling. The very purpose of 'volunteering' is that it should be a voluntary act, yet this mandate forces us into compliance in order to graduate, casting a shadow over our futures.

My friends and I have discussed how these mandatory hours are unrealistic for many students, especially those who come from low-income families and rural areas where volunteer opportunities are scarce. It's not just an inconvenience—it's a burden that contributes to a sense of hopelessness about our futures. As we plan for our lives beyond high school, the looming requirement stands in our way, threatening to derail our dreams and ambitions.

The LEARNS ACT, though well-intentioned, places an undue burden on those of us who want nothing more than to contribute positively to society and further our education. These forced hours could potentially keep us from achieving our educational goals, and they clash with the very idea of what volunteering is supposed to represent. For those of us who struggle to meet existing demands—academically and financially—the added pressure of securing transportation and finding applicable volunteer positions is overwhelming.

I am urging policymakers in Arkansas to reconsider this aspect of the LEARNS ACT and explore more inclusive alternatives that support every student's journey to graduation. This includes potentially lowering the required volunteer hours or providing additional resources and transportation options to ensure that no student's future is compromised due to circumstances beyond their control.

Please stand with us to advocate for a fairer educational framework that respects genuine volunteerism and supports all students in reaching their potential. Sign this petition to call for the abolition or modification of the mandatory volunteer hours, so we all have a fair opportunity to walk the graduation stage and step confidently into our futures.
