The Issue

In the heart of Freeport, Illinois, our community faces a swelling crisis in affordable housing. Over recent months, an alarming shift has taken place; hundreds of rental units have changed hands, consolidating ownership among just a few out-of-town landlords. With these changes, we've seen a dramatic spike in rental rates, pushing them to levels that are simply unaffordable for many local families.

Our community's spirit is being tested. Families who have lived here for generations are being priced out of their homes. The fabric of our neighborhoods is threatened, as out-of-town landlords who lack ties to our community place profit over people. The city has not offered real solutions but has instead diverted struggling tenants to charities that are already stretched thin. They point fingers at the State of Illinois, blaming the existing policies and statutes, particularly the Rent Control Preemption Act.

This law, which prohibits local jurisdictions from enacting rent control measures, takes away a vital tool that the city could use to protect residents from this rental crisis. The consequences of this are dire: increased homelessness and a community left vulnerable to economic exploitation.

It's time to take back control. By abolishing the Rent Control Preemption Act, Illinois can empower cities like Freeport to implement practical and localized solutions to the housing affordability crisis. Local governments should have the authority to regulate and stabilize rents to ensure that everyone has access to safe, affordable, and sustainable housing.

The voices of Freeport residents must be heard. We need to send a clear message to the State Legislature: Support your constituents and repeal the Rent Control Preemption Act. It is not only about housing, but about preserving the diverse, vibrant communities that make Illinois strong.

Join us in this crucial fight for affordable housing by signing this petition today. Advocate for change and help shape a future where everyone has the right to a secure home.
