A Town Council for Potters Bar

The Issue

A petition  for a Community Governance  Review to create a Potters Bar Town Council

If you attended the Potters Bar Society public meeting in May, you will remember that Richard Knox- Johnson (chairman of the London Green Belt Council) talked about the huge changes that are being made to local government and his suggestion that the best way for towns like Potters Bar to protect their character and the Green Belt would be to work toward having a Town Council.

This would provide our town with  a stronger voice on local affairs;  greater control  of our community assets, proper control of the local plan,  enable us to attract funding  and grants, and promote local businesses through events and initiatives.  We could organise local enhancements for our town, including projects to improve quality of residents’ lives, such as   creating and keeping green spaces. We could also organise cultural events, such as the Potters Bar Carnival and the Christmas and various Festivals of lights to celebrate Festivals like Diwali and Christmas.

There is a small charge for  having a Town Council which probably works out at around £5 a month  per household.

We are stronger Together: a TOWN Council for Potters Bar OUR  Town.. Our Say!

In accordance with the statutory  requirements, this petition needs to be  signed by at least 7.5%  (a minimum of 1249 valid signatures) so that Hertsmere will have to consider it.

**All signatories must be over 18 years of age and live in Potters Bar -  please insert your full post code in the appropriate box -  for your signature to be counted.

So Potters Bar  - we need you!

WE, the undersigned local government electors of Potters Bar, call upon Hertsmere Borough Council to conduct a Community Governance Review (CGR) pursuant to Section 80 of the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act, 2007.

WE  petition the following:

1.       Formation of a New Civil Parish:

·         We strongly request the creation of a new parish comprising the currently  unparished district wards of Potters Bar:

·         Bently Health and the Royds

·         Furzefield

·         Oakmere

·         Parkfield

2.       Creation of the Parish and Council:

WE further request that the newly formed civil parish of Potters Bar be governed by a Town  Council to ensure local representation and decision making.

3.       We propose   the name: Potters Bar Town Council or another suitable name reflecting the local identity of the community.

4.       Electoral Arrangements:  the Town Council should have elected representatives, and the review should decide the right number of councillors, election years and whether the parish shall be divided  into wards for electoral purposes.

We urge Hertsmere Borough Council to accept this petition and proceed with a Community Governance Review to establish a Town Council for Potters Bar.
