The Issue

Dear Members of the First Presidency,

We, the undersigned members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, respectfully submit this petition in a spirit of faith, humility, and sustaining support for prophetic leadership and continuing revelation.

We affirm our belief that revelation did not cease in former days, but that the Lord continues to guide His Church through living prophets according to His will, wisdom, and timing. We recognize and honor the sacred responsibility carried by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in seeking and declaring the mind and will of the Lord.

With that faith, we respectfully ask whether it might be appropriate for the Prophet to seek divine guidance regarding the continued prohibition on coffee consumption as currently understood and practiced under the Word of Wisdom.

Basis for Our Request

We submit this request for consideration based on the following observations:

The Word of Wisdom was originally given “not by commandment or constraint” (Doctrine and Covenants 89:2), and its application has historically been clarified and implemented through prophetic interpretation and revelation over time.

Coffee is not explicitly named in scripture, but has been understood through the interpretation of the term “hot drinks,” a phrase whose meaning and application have been influenced by cultural, historical, and medical contexts.
Contemporary medical and scientific research increasingly recognizes that moderate coffee consumption may carry health benefits for many individuals, including cardiovascular, cognitive, and metabolic effects.
The Church has a history of seeking further light and knowledge as circumstances change and as understanding deepens, demonstrating the living nature of revelation.
Many faithful members strive sincerely to live the gospel fully and obediently while experiencing honest questions regarding why coffee remains prohibited while other substances and practices have evolved in understanding and application.

Our Request

We do not seek to challenge doctrine, undermine authority, or advocate for disobedience to current standards.

We respectfully request only that:

The Prophet inquire of the Lord as to whether the continued prohibition on coffee consumption remains His will for the Church at this time.

We affirm that whatever answer is received — whether confirming current practice or introducing change — will be accepted in faith and sustained as revelation from God.

Statement of Faith and Intent
By signing this petition, we affirm that:

We sustain the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

We believe in continuing revelation through living prophets
We accept prophetic guidance as binding when given
We submit this request in humility, patience, and good faith

This petition is offered not in a spirit of criticism, but in trust that sincere questions may be brought before the Lord through His appointed servants.

Signature Goal

This petition seeks 10,000 signatures to demonstrate that this question is held sincerely and thoughtfully by a significant number of individuals who love the Church and trust in prophetic leadership.

Closing

We trust in the Lord’s timing and thank you for your continued service and sacrifice.
