Petition to Remove the School Blazer Requirement:
We, the students of this school, respectfully submit this petition requesting that the requirement to wear blazers be removed from the school uniform policy. We believe that the current blazer requirement is unnecessary, uncomfortable, expensive, impractical, and does not contribute to student learning, wellbeing, or academic success.School uniforms are intended to create a sense of belonging, represent the school community, and ensure students are dressed appropriately for learning. While these goals are important, we believe they can be achieved without requiring students to wear blazers. The existing uniform already identifies us as students of the school and allows us to present ourselves respectfully. The blazer adds little value while creating several disadvantages for students and families.One of the most common concerns raised by students is comfort. Students spend approximately six to seven hours at school every day. During this time, we move between classes, carry heavy school bags, participate in practical activities, attend assemblies, and sometimes spend extended periods outdoors. Wearing a blazer throughout these activities can be uncomfortable and restrictive. Many students feel that blazers limit movement and make it more difficult to stay comfortable during the school day.The climate is another important factor. Western Australia regularly experiences warm temperatures, particularly during Terms 1 and 4. Even during cooler months, classrooms can become warm when filled with students. Requiring students to wear a blazer in these conditions can lead to discomfort and distraction. Students learn best when they are comfortable and able to focus on lessons rather than on how hot or uncomfortable they feel.Another major issue is the cost of purchasing and maintaining a blazer. School uniforms already represent a significant financial commitment for many families. Parents and guardians are required to purchase shirts, skirts, shorts, trousers, sports uniforms, school shoes, hats, and other items. Adding a blazer to this list increases the overall cost of attending school. This expense can place additional pressure on families, particularly when students quickly outgrow clothing during adolescence.Many students also question whether the blazer is worth its cost. Unlike other uniform items that are worn daily and serve a practical purpose, the blazer is often worn primarily because it is required. It does not improve student learning, assist with completing assessments, or help students achieve better academic results. Considering the financial cost, many students and families believe that the money spent on blazers could be better used elsewhere.Students have also expressed concerns about the design of the blazer itself. The inclusion of shoulder pads makes the blazer appear bulky and outdated. Rather than making students feel confident and professional, many feel self-conscious wearing it. Students frequently joke that the blazer makes them look like walking boxes, rectangles, or giant squishmallows. Although these comments are often made humorously, they highlight a genuine issue: many students feel that the blazer does not reflect a modern or comfortable school uniform.The requirement to wear blazers can also create unnecessary stress. Students already have many responsibilities, including completing homework, studying for assessments, participating in extracurricular activities, and managing their daily schedules. Adding another compulsory uniform item means another thing that can be forgotten, lost, damaged, or left at home. Students can face consequences for not wearing a blazer even when they are otherwise in full school uniform. This creates frustration for students and staff alike.Furthermore, there is little evidence that wearing a blazer improves behaviour or school culture. Respectful behaviour, responsibility, kindness, and academic effort are what truly reflect the values of a school community. These qualities come from students' actions, not from the clothing they wear. A student wearing a blazer is not automatically more respectful, hardworking, or responsible than a student who is not.Many schools have successfully maintained high standards of presentation without requiring blazers. Students can still look neat, professional, and identifiable through the use of shirts, ties, school logos, and other uniform items. Removing the blazer requirement would not remove school pride or school identity. Instead, it would allow students to represent the school in a more practical and comfortable way.In addition, student wellbeing should be a priority when making decisions about uniform requirements. Comfort and confidence play an important role in a student's school experience. When students feel comfortable in what they are wearing, they are better able to concentrate, participate in class, and engage positively with their education. A uniform policy should support student wellbeing rather than create unnecessary discomfort.The school has always encouraged students to voice their opinions respectfully and contribute positively to the school community. This petition reflects those values. We are not seeking to reduce standards or avoid wearing a uniform. Rather, we are asking for a uniform policy that better reflects the needs of modern students while continuing to represent the school appropriately.For all of these reasons—including comfort, practicality, cost, student wellbeing, modernisation of the uniform, and the lack of educational benefit—we respectfully request that the school administration remove the requirement for students to wear blazers. We believe that students can continue to represent the school with pride, responsibility, and respect without the need for a compulsory blazer.Thank you for taking the time to consider the views and concerns of the student body.
