A Green New Deal

A Green New Deal
The Issue
We are at a juncture in our nation's history. There are two paths before us: one leads to a reinvigorated economy based on ecologically sustainable principles and respect for worker's rights; the other continues down the road of environmental degradation, corporate control of resources, and social injustice. Imagine for a moment a scene in which thousands upon thousands of Americans are put to work restoring and preserving ecosystems that are threatened by extinction because of human development. That is a noble cause, and that is the Green New Deal.
The Green New Deal is a set of 10 policy positions that take into account the current level of government wastefulness, inactivity, and inadequacy. It offers a fundamental shuffling of priorities to reflect the importance of building domestic America before exporting our values abroad. This isn't a complete list of the progressive policies needed today in America, nor does it address the political difficulty of implementing them. However, by signing, you testify to the fact that fresh, alternative ideas such as those in the Green New Deal are absolutely necessary to guide America into the future.
The Green New Deal is an ambitious program to create economic prosperity together with ecological sustainability. A Green New Deal calls for:
1) Cut military spending at least 70%;
2) Create millions of green union jobs through massive public investment in renewable energy, mass transit and conservation;
3) Set ambitious, science-based greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, and enact a revenue-neutral carbon tax to meet them;
4) Establish single-payer "Medicare for all" health care;
5) Institute tuition-free public higher education;
6) Change trade agreements to improve labor, environmental, consumer, health and safety standards;
7) End counterproductive prohibition policies and legalize marijuana;
8) Enact tough limits on credit card interest and lending rates, progressive tax reform and strict financial regulation;
9) Amend the U.S. Constitution to abolish corporate personhood; and
10) Pass sweeping electoral, campaign finance and anti-corruption reforms.
