Virginio Merola is an Italian politician and member of the Democratic Party who was elected as the Mayor of Bologna in May 2011 and re-elected in 2016. Born in 1955 in Galliate, Piedmont, he initially studied literature and philosophy at the University of Turin before choosing a career in public service.
