Martin Schulz is a prominent German politician and member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He served as the president of the European Parliament from 2012 to 2017, highlighting his significant influence in European politics. He was the SPD's candidate for the Chancellorship in the 2017 federal elections in Germany.
