The Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura (CSM) is the governing body of the judiciary in Italy. As an independent authority, its main function is to ensure the autonomy and independence of judges and prosecutors from other branches of power, including the legislative and the executive. CSM takes care of appointments, transfers, promotions, and disciplinary actions of judges. It is composed of the President of the Republic, who also serves as its chair, the First President and the Prosecutor General of the Court of Cassation, along with sixteen elected members from judges and prosecutors.
