The Congreso de Chile is the legislative branch of the government of Chile that comprises two houses -- the Senate, the upper house, and the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house. Located in Valparaiso, about 140 kilometers west of the capital, Santiago, this bicameral body is responsible for creating and approving laws, monitoring the actions of the government, organization of public administration, and representing the Chilean citizens. Its origins can be traced back to the creation of the First National Congress in 1811, alongside the birth of Chilean sovereignty.
