The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nationwide organization that advocates for individual rights and liberties protected by the United States Constitution and its laws. Founded in 1920, the ACLU engages in litigation, lobbying, and public education to defend and preserve the rights and freedoms of all people in the U.S., regardless of political affiliation. Some of the civil liberties the organization champions include freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equal protection under the law, rights to privacy, and due process.
