Support The Every Vote Plan: Fair Representation for All Communities
The Issue
As an Independent voter, I understand the frustrations felt on both sides under our current Electoral College system. With 38 states consistently voting either Republican or Democrat, many voters feel like their voices don’t matter. In fact, surveys suggest that nearly 100 million Americans feel their vote doesn’t make a difference in national elections. In Republican-leaning states like Texas, Democratic voters often feel their votes are lost in the state’s overall outcome, and similarly for Republican voters in Democratic-leaning states like New Mexico.
The Electoral College was originally designed for a less populated, rural-focused America. But with today’s diverse and shifting population, it no longer serves the needs of our modern democracy. The Every Vote Plan updates this system by giving each county electoral votes based on population size, making sure every community, regardless of its political leanings, has a meaningful voice in the national election.
Consider El Paso County in Texas and Chaves County in New Mexico:
1. El Paso County, Texas: El Paso is a predominantly Democratic county in a state that typically votes Republican. With a population of around 850,000, El Paso’s influence is currently absorbed into Texas’s overall red vote. Under The Every Vote Plan, El Paso County would receive 6 electoral votes based on its population, ensuring that Democratic voters in this county are represented fairly in the national outcome.
2. Chaves County, New Mexico: Known for the city of Roswell, Chaves County has a strong Republican presence in a state that generally leans Democratic. Currently, Republican votes in Chaves County are overshadowed by New Mexico’s overall Democratic lean. With The Every Vote Plan, Chaves County would receive 2 electoral votes, ensuring that Republican voices in this area are also represented fairly.
How The Every Vote Plan Works:
• Less than 50,000 people: 1 vote
• 50,001 to 100,000 people: 2 votes
• 100,001 to 250,000 people: 3 votes
• 250,001 to 500,000 people: 4 votes
• 500,001 to 1 million people: 6 votes
• More than 1 million people: 8 votes (capped)
Currently, our elections are overly focused on a few swing states like Pennsylvania and Florida, where candidates direct nearly all their attention. Under The Every Vote Plan, every county matters, and candidates would need to consider a broader range of issues that impact all Americans—not just those in swing states. This plan would reduce the overwhelming influence of swing states, encouraging candidates to campaign across the entire nation.
This isn’t a win for one party—it’s a win for every American, creating a united democracy where all voices, from every county, contribute to the outcome. The Every Vote Plan gives rural and urban areas, Democrats and Republicans, the representation they deserve.
Why This Matters:
The Every Vote Plan would encourage candidates to engage with voters across all 50 states, not just a few battlegrounds. It’s a step toward a democracy where every vote truly counts, bridging divides and ensuring that all voices are represented.
