Protect our right to freedom of speech : Let the People Vote on Senate Bill 1

The Issue

As a professional tutor in Ohio, I find myself at a crossroads, grappling with a growing fear—the fear of losing the freedom to express and explore different ideas. Universities should be places where ideas flow freely, not where they are policed. But with the introduction of Senate Bill 1, that freedom is at risk. This bill doesn’t just threaten academic discourse—it strikes at the heart of our First Amendment right to free speech. Will college professors still be able to present diverse viewpoints, or will they be forced to tiptoe around important discussions? College students don’t need their perspectives dictated to them; they need access to a range of viewpoints so they can think critically and form their own conclusions.

Senate Bill 1 has the potential to reshape education in Ohio in ways that affect us all. This isn’t about blindly opposing or supporting the bill—it’s about ensuring that such an important decision is made democratically. If this bill limits free expression in our schools, shouldn’t the people of Ohio have a direct say in the matter? That’s why we’re calling for a referendum, so every Ohioan has the chance to weigh in and make their voice heard.

Democracy thrives when people have a say in the policies that shape their lives. Let’s not take that right for granted. Sign this petition and help us demand a referendum on Senate Bill 1. Our right to free speech—and the integrity of our education system—depend on it.

We demand that lawmakers allow the recently introduced Senate Bill 1 be put in it's entirety up to the people of Ohio (through referendum).

This petition does not formally put any issue into law or up to vote. It is simply to the attention of people who have that power. We need to show people that this change is possible and the people want a say. There is information about the bill in the links below.
