Urging United Nation's Action to Protect Human Rights and Democracy in Pakistan
The Issue
His Excellency Mr. António Guterres
Secretary-General United Nations
Subject: Petition - Urgent Action Required on the Current Situation in Pakistan
Dear United Nations Leadership,
We, the undersigned concerned global citizens, write to you with great urgency and deep concern regarding the distressing civil unrest, violations of human rights, and erosion of democratic values currently taking place in Pakistan. As advocates for justice, human rights, and democracy, we believe it is our moral obligation to register our concerns and implore the United Nations, under your esteemed leadership, to take necessary actions to ensure justice, human rights, and the fair continuation of democracy in Pakistan.
Current Situation in Pakistan:
The current situation in Pakistan is deeply alarming and raises serious concerns. We highlight the following key issues:
Violation of Democratic Principles and Constitutuion: Elections are not being held within three months of the dissolution of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) provincial assemblies, in direct violation of democratic principles and the constitution. This undermines the democratic processes and institutions that are fundamental to a democratic society.
Military Involvement in Politics: The deep involvement of the military in politics, with its alignment with the sitting government, raises significant concerns about the impartiality and independence of the political process. This interference not only undermines the principles of democracy but also contributes to an environment of political polarization and unrest.
Unfair Arrests and Erosion of Due Process: The government's actions of making dubious cases against opposition party leaders, journalists, citizens, and politicians, and the unlawful arrests of thousands of individuals without access to the legal system, erode the principles of justice and fairness that are essential for a democratic society.
Media Control and Suppression: The control exerted by the military and the government over Pakistani media raises serious concerns about freedom of the press. Journalists face severe censorship, limiting the dissemination of information and stifling public discourse, thereby hindering the democratic principles of transparency and accountability.
United Nations Objectives and Responsibility:
The United Nations, as an international organization, has a strong commitment to advancing democracy, human rights, freedom of expression, and global stability which is highlighted in the following objectives and responsibilities:
Maintaining international peace and security: The United Nations is responsible for promoting and maintaining international peace and security, which includes addressing situations where civil unrest, violations of human rights, and erosion of democratic values occur.
Protecting human rights: The United Nations is committed to upholding and promoting human rights globally, including civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. It has a responsibility to address human rights violations and support the protection of democracy. It aims to address issues such as violations of democratic principles, unfair arrests, and suppression of media that hinder social progress and human rights
Facilitating international cooperation: The United Nations serves as a platform for dialogue and cooperation among nations, aiming to foster collaboration on global issues such as peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development. It has a responsibility to engage with member states and address concerns related to civil unrest, violation of human rights and democratic principles.
Steps United Nations Should Take:
In light of the current situation in Pakistan and the United Nations' objectives and responsibility to uphold peace, security, law, human rights, and democracy, we urge United Nations leadership to take the following actions:
- Register Concerns and Engage with Pakistani Authorities: The United Nations should formally register its concerns with the Pakistani authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, and directly engage with Pakistani Foreign minster, Prime Minister and Army Chief. This approach would demonstrate the United Nation’s commitment to upholding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, while expressing concerns at the highest level. It would encourage the Pakistani government to take necessary measures to address civil unrest, military involvement in politics, unfair arrests, severe media censorship, and other issues jeopardizing justice, human rights, and democracy. This engagement would further underscore the United Nations' dedication to supporting Pakistan in its journey towards stability and development.
- Dispatch Independent Observers: The United Nations, in collaboration with other international bodies and organizations, should consider dispatching independent observers to monitor the electoral and judicial processes in Pakistan. Their presence would help ensure fair and free elections, independent reporting, timely justice, and transparency, thereby restoring trust in the media, legal and electoral systems.
- Mobilize International Support: The United Nations should actively engage with the international community, member states, and regional organizations to raise awareness and garner support for addressing civil unrest, protecting democracy, and ensuring respect for human rights in Pakistan. Diplomatic pressure and collective efforts by other member nations can contribute to a fair and just resolution of the ongoing crisis.
We understand the importance of respecting the sovereignty of nations and not interfering in their internal matters. However, when justice, human rights, freedom of speech, peaceful protests, and democracy are at stake, these issues become global concerns. The United Nations' proud history of upholding these values and advocating for their protection worldwide positions the organization to make a difference and contribute to the restoration of justice, democracy, and stability in Pakistan.
We kindly request your urgent attention to this matter, as time is of the essence. The global community looks to your leadership to champion their concerns and take action. Your efforts in addressing this critical issue will be greatly appreciated by concerned citizens worldwide who believe in the fundamental principles of justice, human rights, and democracy.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We trust that under your leadership, the United Nations will take the necessary steps to address this urgent matter and promote a fair and just resolution to the ongoing civil unrest in Pakistan.
Yours sincerely,
Concerned Global Citizens
