The latest February 2025 Windows update makes Windows Mixed Reality unable to even install. Forget about Microsoft's promise to keep it viable until 2026, they locked it up at the start of 2025 in a Windows 10 update. I now have a perfectly fine Dell Visor VR headset that was working perfectly until the update that my son spent several hundred dollars on for a gift for me for my birthday that is now as useful as a paper weight. I was enjoying Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 with it because the VR experience in the simulator is unexcelled, now, flat screen views of what I once enjoyed in glorious VR now makes it unplayable for me. I am not spending several hundred dollars for another VR headset just for a flight simulator!

Microsoft shouldn't have to continue to invest in a platform they consider dead, but making it so that people are unable to use something that they paid for that is unacceptable. Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) Headsets are still functional and can be used for a plethora of Virtual Reality experiences. Forcing a product into a non-functional state when it could still be used, no matter if it is considered obsolete / unsupported or not, is not okay. This decision from Microsoft creates a large amount of unnecessary of e-waste which forces consumers to contribute to environmental harm. It also takes away from consumers who purchased the headset(s) making it so the product they spent their hard earned money on, which otherwise would be still fully or mostly functional, fully non-functional. By making the WMR Platform open source, Microsoft would not have to invest into the project while also allowing independent developers to keep the function of their headsets as-well as others. By removing the functionality of the headsets completely, Microsoft wont have to invest into it anymore but will as a side effect be taking away from consumers who bought into the platform and generate a large amount of unnecessary e-waste.

Windows Mixed Reality is not dead. It's users still exist, and have invested significantly in our hardware. Bricking this expensive hardware with no alternative in this manner is unacceptable, when an open source version could be easily trimmed down and released to the community to maintain for ourselves at no cost to Microsoft.

I’m a VR user. And this change in windows mixed reality has turned my hardware into a brick. It is ridiculous that Microsoft has made this change without any sort of fallback or option to be able to continue to use my headset. Something should be done about this as many many people have VR hardware that can only run beside WMR

I own an HP reverb g2, that's $500, at the time of purchase, that will become a paperweight on a platform that made no inclination to it being limited time only. Companies need to stop arbitrarily killing products or games on a whim and screwing over the very people that made them so successful. End of support is understandable, but end of all use if you want any updates at all is horrendous and predatory. I can't in good conscious even sell this device/now shelf display paperweight to recoup some of the cost. Microsoft much backtrack, release driver, make this open source, or reimburse those who bought into the platform. If other companies pay their users for mistakes like this (such as apple with their batteries and slowing of older models) then so should they. This action is class action lawsuit worthy and must be remedied in some way.
