If you are behind the wheel of a vehicle of any size, you should be able to read and understand the native language so that incidents like this can be avoided. My husband is an OTR truck driver who also happens to be Hispanic, and he agrees with my opinion. He also made it a point to learn to speak and read English because he knew that it would be beneficial to his life and career to do so. Our hearts hurt for this young man and his family. This accident was completely unnecessary and totally preventable, and I am signing this petition in hopes that our voices will be heard and the law will be changed!

We live in an English speaking country with signs and regulations in this language too. If you drive a commercial vehicle not only should you be able to read this but know the meaning. I had a German drivers license and learned their signs in German and knew the meaning. No parents, grandparents, family should loose a child to a driver who doesn't have knowledge of traffic signs and regulations.

My fiancé got hit by a semi-truck who didn’t speak any English as well. He was in a roundabout and his wheel got ripped clean off. The driver tried blaming my fiancé for the accident and since he was a teen at that time the cop believed the driver until my fiancé explained to the cop everything. His car was never the same and it was so much money to replace. I’m so sorry for your loss

Holding this family close to my broken heart. My daughter lost her life due to drivers who were not following the rules of the road, the law! Forever 25 Caitlynn Mitchell's mama, 12/19/1997-09/05/2023. I also have a petition out to, at the very least, enforce the law. PROBATION is not a punishment! My prayers are with you.

I am a mother, I could not fathom the loss of a child due to our government allowing someone unqualified to drive a moving weapon. That is what a semi is: it's a lethal weapon in the wrong hands. As lawmakers, you have a duty of care to American Citizens. Take care of your citizens!! Enact this law!!! Protect us and our babies!!

Please don’t take this the wrong way. Distracted driving is a serious issue that can lead to accidents, regardless of the driver's language proficiency. While signage is important, attentive drivers are typically able to recognize traffic patterns and potential hazards ahead without relying solely on signs. The trucking industry is already facing significant driver shortages. Imposing language-based restrictions could further strain the workforce and negatively impact the broader economy. What happened to Connor is undeniably tragic, and my heart goes out to everyone affected. However, it's important to recognize that accidents are not exclusive to non-English-speaking drivers. As a former school bus driver, I always prioritized staying alert and focused on the road, which is a responsibility every driver must uphold. I recently visited Japan. I was able to communicate enough using the translation apps on my phone to get by. I can't imagine living there and not knowing the basic language. That said, I've signed the petition. I do believe that CDL's should have a basic level of English proficiency.

We shouldn't have to have a petition to get a law already on the books enforced. We just need the President and Commissioner of FMCSA to do their job and say, " enforce the law and pull any license and put any driver out of service that doesn't talk or read English proficient enough to drive". It's that simple. I was in a truck stop and a driver that couldn't say more than, "how much" was trying to buy fuel. He had no idea how much money he had left in his fuel account and the clerk couldn't check it. He kept saying, "how much". That's the only semi English words I heard him say. He was still there after I had fueled, paid and walked out the door. We don't need drivers like this on our highways that can't read or speak English. It's not being hateful or prejudice against anyone. It's being responsible and looking out for public safety. We were shut down, kept from church, funerals, limited to numbers in groups, stores, restaurants, Dr's offices etc closed all in the name of public safety during Covid. Yet someone that can't read or understand road signs or English can drive a 80,000 chunk of plastic and metal on our highways at 75-80 mph ?

I was a Professional Truck Driver for 7 years, all over America. I saw many needless serious accidents, and many careless, reckless, dangerous Drivers driving Semi Trucks that were very poorly maintained. Safety on our Highways is 1st priority for everyone. Fake CDLs are SOLD on the Black Market to unskilled people who Drive Semi Trucks. This has to STOP! Only competent properly tested and Drivers should be in Big Trucks.

As a CDL holder myself, I have seen some horrific, irresponsible driving from other "truck drivers" and it seems to be on the increase. I have narrowly avoided accidents with these reckless drivers who were blatantly ignoring safe CDL practices. The issue of drivers not being compliant to the reading and language laws lies at the feet of the government not enforcing said laws, schools passing students thats don't meet the language standard and companies who hore them regardless. In the industry these are known as "steering wheel holders", as their knowledge does not go much further than that. I deal with these drivers on the daily, they bring a lot more negative to the industry than just a language barrier. I cannot fathom entering a non-English speaking country and and being so unconcerned, or even arrogant, to think that I would be okay operating any type of motor vehicle there, let alone an 80,000 pound missile. This isnt about racism nor any other negative reason. It is purely about safety, period. Therefore I fully support Connor's Law emphatically and wholeheartedly.

This young man and others have lost their life's due to the fact that people are not fully qualified to do the job that is asked if you are going to drive in a country where most people speak English then you should have to speak it or pass different certification for our road signs being they are wrote in English..If it's happened once it can happen again stop ignoring it and making excuses like English isn't are certified Language or whatever ..think if this was your loved one how would you feel ..how can we allow driver who can't speak English ..which means they can't read English out on the roads with massive vehicles and expect anyone to feel safe ...
