As a Vietnamese American and a member of the United States military, I am deeply concerned by the derogatory and disrespectful rhetoric that has been directed toward Vietnamese refugees and members of the Vietnamese American community.
Many Vietnamese “boat people” endured persecution, imprisonment, dangerous sea journeys, separation from their families, and tremendous personal sacrifice in their search for freedom. Referring to these refugees in degrading terms, including comparing them to “dogs,” is offensive and dismissive of the suffering experienced by an entire generation of Vietnamese people.
I also strongly object to repeated sweeping and misleading portrayals of life in the United States. America is not a perfect country, and reasonable people may criticize its government, tax system, workplaces, or social conditions. Freedom of speech protects the right to express those opinions. However, criticism should be based on facts and expressed responsibly, particularly when addressing a large public audience. Personal dissatisfaction should not be presented as an accurate description of life for all Americans.
Likewise, anyone is free to express views about Vietnam or its political system, but promoting one political ideology does not justify insulting Vietnamese refugees or belittling the country that provided generations of Vietnamese families with an opportunity to rebuild their lives in freedom.
My military service has given me an especially strong appreciation for the freedoms that allow people in the United States to speak openly—even when others strongly disagree with them. With that freedom also comes personal responsibility and accountability for the way we treat other people.
I am signing this petition not to silence legitimate opinions or political discussion, but to call for basic respect, factual responsibility, and civility. I respectfully ask Ms. Tran to stop using degrading language toward Vietnamese refugees, to refrain from making misleading generalizations about Americans and life in the United States, and to engage with those who disagree with her in a respectful and constructive manner.

Hôm nay, tôi liên lạc với quý vị bằng một trái tim nặng trĩu, do bị thôi thúc bởi hàng loạt hành vi quấy rối liên tục mà cộng đồng người tị nạn miền Nam Việt Nam – cộng đồng luôn gần gũi với tôi – phải chịu đựng trên nhiều nền tảng mạng xã hội. Một cá nhân không ngừng nghỉ tấn công cộng đồng chúng ta bằng nhiều lời nói và hành động hạ nhục, xát muối vào vết thương mà nhiều người trong chúng ta đã mang trong mình qua nhiều thập kỷ. Kiểu loại hành vi này không chỉ gây tổn thương mà còn vô cùng đáng lo ngại và làm suy yếu trải nghiệm của vô số người đã phải chịu đựng dưới chế độ cộng sản sau khi mất Sài Gòn.
Nỗi đau của việc sống lưu vong không tự nguyện và mất quê hương là một chấn thương tâm lý chung đối với chúng ta. Những người tị nạn và gia đình đã xây dựng cuộc sống mới ở nhiều nơi trên khắp thế giới, luôn luôn phải đối mặt với những thử thách to lớn trên hành trình đó. Vậy mà giờ đây, chúng ta lại phải đối mặt với trận chiến khác – một trận chiến đảm bảo rằng câu chuyện của chúng ta, phẩm giá của chúng ta, và cả bản sắc của chúng ta phải được tôn trọng và bảo vệ trên không gian mạng.
Sự quấy rối này không chỉ ảnh hưởng đến từng cá nhân mà còn xé toạc kết cấu của sự đoàn kết và hỗ trợ của cộng đồng. Nó duy trì các định kiến, làm sống lại những vết thương cũ, và cố gắng xóa bỏ lịch sử vốn là phần không thể tách rời trong con người chúng ta. Loại hành vi này không thể chấp nhận được, và phải bị ngăn chặn.
Chúng ta kêu gọi các nền tảng mạng xã hội phải chủ động chống lại loại quấy rối này. Họ phải thực thi các chính sách và giám sát nghiêm ngặt hơn để bảo vệ các cộng đồng dễ tổn thương khỏi việc bị quấy rối có chủ đích. Bằng cách áp dụng các hệ thống giám sát tân tiến và khuyến khích người dùng báo cáo hành vi quấy rối như vậy, họ có thể tạo ra môi trường an toàn hơn, nơi mà tất cả tiếng nói đều được lắng nghe mà không sợ bị trả thù.
Hơn nữa, những cá nhân nào thực hiện các hành vi quấy rối gây hại như vậy nên bị buộc chịu trách nhiệm thông qua các tiêu chuẩn cộng đồng như cảnh cáo, đình chỉ, và nếu cần, bị cấm vĩnh viễn khỏi nền tảng.

These children do not even understand the ramifications from having digital footprint that they gave zero permission to! The fact that these children will grow up and see their faces or life story all over the internet is so sad and it needs to be stopped! There is a 5 yr old in Florida being exploited all over the internet because of his mother and sadly her digital footprint is tied to his and he has no say so in the matter and it's all in the name of financial gain that is clearly not being put to use for his current needs such as a sensory room or even towards his future education and any future therapy he most certainly will need after seeing what his mom has put all over the internet. This also applies to many other children being exploited for financial gain at the expense of their future livelihood.
