I have a bit of a different story from the usual person.
As of 2025, FASFA has an option for provisional independence. This allows individuals to file without their parents' tax information. However, the requirements are sometimes absurd. Some states require the parent to be jailed in order for a child to qualify, while others require written statements from case workers or counselors.
There's also the fact "provisionally independent" is the status given to individuals who are are independent under unusual circumstances (abusive/neglectful parents & domestic situations), to which many are unable to provide for themselves due to said circumstances.
I'm someone who was in an abusive situation when they first applied for the FASFA, and was stuck in a situation where I 1) could not get out of the house—college dorms WERE my ticket out, and 2) could not fulfill the counselor requirements as school officers are mandated reporters.
Because of that, I lost a 13k+ need based scholarship and struggle to procure enough to pay my tuition. I couldn't even use my family's tax information as its unsafe for me to talk to them.
I filed my own taxes, worked, and was independent in every other way, I just couldn't afford a place to stay other than in a domestic situation.
I definitely wasn't the first to find themselves caught in a situation like that, and won't be the last. FASFA's requirements and processes need to change.
