While a student at UC Berkeley, I volunteered for several years (2014-2018) at the Nikkei Berkeley senior Center. I had the pleasure of working with Kayo-san and seeing first hand the positive effects the groups service was having on the seniors who were attending. They were always excited to attend and thanked us for our work. Kayo-san’s dedication to the program really helped it shine. In addition, I learned a lot about Japanese home cooking in the process from her. As someone who is of Japanese descent, this was an invaluable learning experience allowing me to better connect with my heritage. I strongly urge the council to reconsider their decision and reinstate Kayo-San and the program’s support. It makes a positive impact on the members of the community of all ages.
Kayo-san has been the heart and soul of the program since I began volunteering in 2018. Because of her efforts we were able to continue services throughout the pandemic years, providing seniors with visits and delivered lunches every month. This was especially important since social isolation was especially pronounced for seniors during the pandemic.
I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact that the center has had on the Nikkei community, from the young volunteers to the seniors participating in our programming. The center has provided an aging minority population the opportunity to celebrate and share their culture with younger generations through food, music and activities.
Loss of support from the city of Berkeley is a shame and I strongly petition the city to reconsider. The community that the center has built over generations deserves better.
While at Cal I would volunteer to this program on the weekends and could feel the real impact of it on the senior community. We provided healthy meals and activities that not only nourished but also brought people together. It’s heartbreaking to see such an impactful program be cut like this. Kayo is an amazing community leader and cares for those she serves and should return immediately.
My94 year old mother resides in the memory care unit at Harborside. This is part of her plan to retire comfortably and have proper care in her later years.
Harborside has been mismanaged and the sizable amount of funds placed in escrow have been exhausted by management
