Emily Hollis is a close friend of mine and it truly enraged me to find out that they labeled her, a minor, as a runaway when they knew she was with an older guy. I don't want any parents, friends, or families of other children to have to deal with cases being dismissed as "runaways"
I am not one to sign things like this but the board’s decision to make Brent interim president is one of the worst decisions for our community that they have made in a long time. Prior to Brent’s dv arrest he was in charge of the college’s Title IX work. It is no surprise why they had to remove him from this and rename his position after his arrest. Clearly the board thought the community had a short memory when they named him interim president. I am proud of SMC being our local college but this decision puts it in a really bad light. The college deserves better leadership.
Dear Members of the Board,
I am a survivor of domestic violence. Abusers can hide in plain sight and gather sympathy from people who don't understand their Jekyll/Hyde behavior. Of interest is his certification as a R.A.D systems instructor in self-defense and a title Xl Investigator. Overlooking the arrest and statements about other acts of aggression, by Mr. Brewer's wife and children, is troubling. Leaders should be held in esteem not askance.
I would expect that a college President would have already earned a Ph.D or Ed.D but Mr. Brewer holds an MBA in Business Administration instead. All his educational experience has been gained at SMC.
There is an expectation that no one with a besmirched public record or lack of credentials should be put in charge of any organization. I hope the Board reaches out for a more substantial candidate.
Respectfully,
Lois Koel

I strongly oppose the consideration of Brent Brewer as president of Southwest Michigan College. The students of SMC need leadership rooted in integrity and respect. This is an opportunity to change the culture, to choose a leader who will prioritize a safe, inclusive environment for ALL students and staff. We need someone who is not only qualified but embodies the values that align with the dignity and well-being of the entire campus community. Choosing the wrong leader sends the message that these core issues are not truly being addressed.
