In the 70’s, both Ferris and Shadle Park had horticulture classes. Not everyone wants to take chemistry and these classes kept kids interested in science. I am now 69 and gardening has been my passion since high school at Ferris.
Most people in our generation have already forgotten how to care for the earth and how to live in awareness of the delicate balance that we must maintain to promote sustainable health. We need to give the next generation every opportunity to succeed in this and become more holistic humans. I would argue that the practical skills of earth tending are even more important than math.
Classes like this are the kind of classes that breathe life into academia. Math and science have value, but they have the most value when students see them in action. Don’t take meaning away from our youth.
I took this class for 4 years! It was one of the BIGGEST influencing classes I took. I still use many principles I learned in this class today and I graduated in 1987! We need more classes like this that teaches more that pertains to everyday life and skills you can use outside of school. I was not into sports, so this class was also a valuable activity to participate in.
As someone who was never good at sports, never mathematically inclined, or a history junkie, I always found my home and safe space in the horticultural studies. I say studies because it wasn’t just the greenhouse that ignite my creativity and passion, it was the elements that we were being taught. The only thing that I remember from high school, was everything I learned in my horticulture class. Green thumbs are our future. Don’t give up on us now.
Please do not eliminate this program, it is so important for young people to understand where their food is coming from and how we can and do affect ourselves and the environment. This program not only encourages physical wellbeing but also mental health. but also
I was in Plant Science for 3 years and it was the most informative core class I've taken. The skills I've learned of memorizing plant names, making floral bows, creating floral arrangements, teamwork, and taking inventory for the annual plant sale has helped me grow as a person and grow as an employee at my job. In a completely different state, my knowledge from Plant Science came in handy when spotting a Bird of Paradise plant while hanging out with a friend. Building and learning about a Hydroponic System was such a niche and unique experience everyone should have the chance to learn about. Science was such a struggle to me until I was given the opportunity to learn about Plant Science. It's so much more than just plants, it's about agriculture as well. SPHS is one of the very few high schools in Washington that has a greenhouse. Plant Science is fundamental and shouldn't be taken away. It's an amazing learning experience.
And this age filled up technology. We have already forgotten so many things that just our grandparents understood and knew about plants and the ecosystem we live in.
We become reliant on a technology that is ultimately fragile. We need to go back to grass roots and understand the world we live on that’s the only way to protect it on top of the fact if, a day technology fails us we need to know how to survive.
Plant science will give young adults and appreciation for this beautiful planet. It’s scientifically proven that technology causes anxiety and young adults and often depression. It’s also scientifically, proven nature, relieves, anxiety, and relieves depression. It seems pretty clear. Don’t rob these young adults of this thing. They need way more instead cultivate and appreciation that’s what real leaders do.
This program literally shaped my career. I did not know at the time that I would pursue a career in horticulture, but now I've been a professional gardener for over 20 years. I employ 12-15 gardeners and we take care of 75-100 gardens every year. I garden with the current scientific techniques, and I got that start right here in this program.
We need more of these programs in other high schools. We do not need to cut the last one!
