Ever since I started dying my hair n goin to school I got hunted down n threatened multiple times to go to iss from the administrators. I had to dye my hair a total of 4 times last year jus be of the color.
Therefore, Ihad to spend money that we barely afforded at that time jus to get brown hair dye.
The beginning of the year I had blue in my hair so they made me change it so l dyed it brown but the blue was still there so they dressed coded me again then I dyed it red n they made me change it one last time. We've had a shooting threat my freshman year n they barely took action n kept school goin but they were more worried bout our hair color more than a shooting threat or the amount of vapes n drugs that are at our school. Dyed hair is a form of self expression jus like our clothes, accessories, etc ;which falls into our first amendment rights as student letting us express ourselves in any way. it's not a distraction of education but what is a distraction is gettin pulled to the side n get coded for our hair. Especially getting put into iss or even daep jus for a hair color is huge n would effect our education Worsen .

No one had noticed or said anything about it, but I went up and asked our principal at the time a question and he was like you have blue hair tips. You’re not supposed to have that and wrote me up immediately I was then told by Mr. McGowan that I either had to cut my hair or sit in ISS until it came out. I think having different colored hair is not a distraction. It’s a way of expressing yourself and it’s the least of anyone’s problems the only people who care is staff (not all). During my freshman year I saw a lot of people with like faded green or like a faded color in their hair, but nobody said anything about it. Nobody got onto them so why does it matter? I then moved my sophomore year went to a completely different school, where people could dye their hair, whatever color and nobody cared. I get that you want to keep a good name to Chapel Hill but I believe that people should be allowed to express themselves with whatever color hair they choose.

Dyeing their hair is one method of expression for them but due to strict dress code thy aren’t allowed to. This petition would allow this and hopefully provide a stepping stone towards a progressive educational environment.

But the admin always yell at the students who died their hair, (even if it's natural) to either dye it into a normal color, cut it, or face severe consequences. That always bugged me. Why do the admin always get people in trouble over something as small as dying your hair? It's not a distraction anymore because of how common it is today and if anything, it's a form of expression! So the admin yelling at everyone to not dye their hair (even a natural color) just feels like a form of taking away someone's way of expression or even lowering someone's self-esteem. As a former student, I want this petition to succeed because died hair isn't hurting anyone!!! Let that sink in, after all, that's a reason why I left this school. Let there be changes that aren't hurting anyone and allowing students to freely express themselves.
