When I was 13 I was gang raped and till this day my rapists were never held accountable and I just hate seeing this happen in a school where children are supposed to feel safe , it’s completely unexeptale
My adult son, who suffers from mental illness, is facing homelessness due to the sex offender registration. He did not hurt anyone, just downloaded some photos he shouldn’t have, but that, and the fact that he’s mentally ill, does not matter. Florida would rather have these individuals living on the streets. The public sex offender registration is a gross violation of human rights and civil liberties. They are being punished for a crime they MAY commit due to their status. Someone with power and wealth needs to take up this fight. I, unfortunately, am nearly broke from paying for a motel for my son to stay in.
I care for this petition very much
Because being in a registered list is a danger I had one of my friends killed because some tyrant hostiles found out he was in the register list, he has brutally and harshly killed he didn’t deserve that…. Being on a registration is a an assassination of character .
I would like to voice my support for this letter and it's message with some examples of how the Registry has personally impacted me since my release from prison in 2017 and completion of probation in 2019.
Let me first state that since my release I haven't had so much as a speeding ticket, much less any re-offense relating to my original conviction. Let me also state that my original conviction was a non-contact crime. I have never, nor would I ever, harm another human being...especially not a child.
I was a regular customer at a local restaurant for nearly two years when one night I arrived and the manager asked to speak to me in private outside. I was told that one of the staff had seen my picture on the Registry and no longer felt comfortable having me as a customer...despite there being no issues at all for the two years ate there. I was barred from the restaurant for life.
Similarly, I was a regular customer at a local discount store where I procured inventory for my small business. (A business I started because I couldn't get hired at any other job due to my Registration.) I had become friends with the owners of the store and was even brought out to dinner by them to discuss additional opportunities that our partnership could create. I was told that I was one of the two customers they actually trusted because I always paid what I owned and stood by my word on certain agreements.
Just like the restaurant situation, one day I showed up to shop and was escorted outside. My Registration was brought up and I explained in detail everything that had happened. Regardless, I was barred from entering the premises again. The positive relationship and goodwill was thrown away due to my status alone. My business was hurt as a result despite me doing absolutely everything right in terms of the business relationship.
I took on an additional part time job last July to help provide me some additional resources to grow my business sooner. While I'm able to work in my state, the job provides lots of additional opportunities in my neighboring State that I must decline due to Registry rules. The owner knows my situation and understands. However, his desire to put me in a management role (which would benefit both of us) can't happen if I can't work half the jobs available. Yet another consequence of what the Registry has become.
In my neighborhood, I have been harassed by multiple neighbors. Some even had the Sheriff's Office show up at my door to inquire about false charges that they accused me of. Nothing ever came of it, thank God, because I could easily prove I wasn't where they said I was. A couple weeks later, one neighbor used her car to block my ability to leave my parking space and she proceeded to scream at me for nearly 5 minutes about all sorts of things that I never did.
I could go on, but I'm already long. The point is that the Registry was a bad idea from the start, and it has morphed into something that even those with good intentions at the start could never have foreseen. It has turned us into second class citizens who lose friendships, business relationships, opportunities, and even just the peace and quiet that living in a nice neighborhood should allow. I attend a great men's Bible study at my church, but I'm terrified to attend regular services for fear of being recognized and accosted.
The Registry must end. I would honestly be better off had I committed a violent crime that didn't end with forced registration. To put it colloquially, "that's just messed up".
My son is not and has not ever been a threat to anyone. He is not a predator. He was prayed on by a mother and her daughter of whom both lied about the age. Running our lives for almost 25 years now. For one there needs to be a classification added one that takes into consideration special circumstances, as was in my Son situation and many many others. Being on the sex offenders list for the rest of your life in a situation like this, where even the prosecutor, the state attorney came up to me and said With everything that we uncovered in the investigation, I hate to give him any time, but he has to get the minimum due to the charge. And now they make things so hard being on probation that my son gave up another six years of his life to go to prison and serve out his probation time there. but that didn’t make a difference because now with all the registration red tape, he still can’t stay on the trouble because if they can’t find something, they will create something. I could tell you stories all day, but I’m gonna close here and hope and pray that someone it’s going to help my son and many others.
My husband of 15 years is a RSO. He was married before we met and was going through a tough divorce when his then wife invited him over to talk, they had consensual sex, saved her underwear and called the police and said he raped her. There were no bruises. Even her official statement makes zero sense. She wanted everything, including sole custody of their minor child and got it. He couldn’t afford a lawyer (or bail) and the prosecutor said he would get 7 years in prison because of DNA. He offered him a deal if he plead guilty. He refused to plead guilty but was afraid of prison so he plead no contest. This was 25 years ago. My husband is a good man and deserves a chance to live a life free from his past. We got a new neighbor 8 months ago and the police have been to our home 4 times because we have cameras for our protection. They have threatened my entire family with violence because we are “sick monsters”. The registry, especially in its current form, does not work. A predator will always find a way whether there is a registry or not. Perhaps a registry for repeat offenders or certain cases but the only thing the current registry does is put people who have “paid their debt to society” and their families at risk.
How can we expect people to integrate back into society and be successful if the registry limits where they can live and work. They become homeless, get arrested for petty incidents and back into jail they go. The system has fail them! I know we can do better!
This has wrecked the life of my son who is a professional cellist. Caught in a sting with no victim, his life has been hell. Out on probation, finding a place to live was horrible. He ended up with a bunch of other convicts in a flop house approved by the cops or he would be living in an orange grove like the cops suggested at first. We treat dogs better than the state of florida has treated my son. Registry is cruel, the stings are at best tricking dumb young men into slavery to the state. Now he has no internet access, on house arrest, has to pay $300 a month to the state for his registry and we have to help with transport to all the dumb things the state requires of him. It is an outrage but no one will
Listen.
my son caught in online dating site, entrapment. he went looking for an adult, and law enforcement violated every aspect of law, from violating state and federal laws, to civil rights, to perjury to grand jury and state/federal judges, this needs to be cleaned up, his whole military life, and his family are lost, his freedom will never be returned.. Human rights are an absolute need.
