In November of 2023 I was assaulted by a sleeping vagrant because I confronted him about throwing objects at my wife. This Veteran's day I was approached by another vagrant who wanted my wallet to spare myself from a beatdown. This all occurred beyond the lines that require you to have a valid transit pass. Riding the rapid transit in Cleveland is totally not safe with the current policies this current administration has setup. Something must be done immediately.
I'll be really sad to see the Northstar go. It had the potential to be a great service to 10,000's of people along the line, but was never given the chance. They stopped the line at Big Lake instead of St. Cloud, and for some baffling reason refuse to run the line on the weekends. I loved riding the Northstar every time I did, it's unfortunate that is was mismanaged run into the ground and killed like this.
I have ridden Northstar since January 2010 and love it. In 2011 when I had some heath issues and could not drive I could still get to work. I just wish it went to St Cloud as I have to take a bus from St Cloud to Big Lake to get on train.
I take this from Big Lake to Minneapolis 3 days a week. I love the no stress commute!!! I couldn't imagine driving in.
They want to replace the train with busses. Which would increase the commute from the Big Lake station at 50 minutes, to a 1 hour 40 minute commute. No thanks!! You can bet I will not be taking the bus! I will be driving in instead. Looking at parking prices already.
Also, I'm not sure what they are going to do about the additional runs they add when the Twins and Vikings games are going on! How about the ability to take the train and then transfer to the light rail for a flight out of MSP? How convenient is that!? I will definitely utilize this for my next trip if I fly our during the week...IF the train stays.
The North Star commuter line is my only way home to family in Becker since I am a full time student at the University of Minnesota. Please don’t take away my ride home 😭
They totally lied when they said they were bringing a COMMUTER TRAIN to the north/northwest suburbs. This train has never ran OFTEN ENOUGH for commuters to make a go of it because they share the tracks with Burlington. I tried when it first started running, it was great getting downtown Mpls, not having to drive or pay for parking. But, the schedule for getting home was terrible. If I worked an 8 hour day, off at 2:30PM, the first train northbound wasn’t until 3:57. That’s a long time to wait. If I worked a 12 hour day, off at 6:30PM, the last train northbound was 6:10PM. So now I’m stranded downtown Mpls. Not fun. So, I had to sell my Silverado and buy a commuter car and now I pay for monthly contract parking to go to work. I wish so badly the Northstar COMMUTER train would run more often. I truly believe they would have great ridership if there were more trips.
I’m actually not a user of the Northstart to get into Minneapolis, but someone who wants to use it to get to St Cloud on weekends to visit in-laws. They live very close to the bus stop, and we are able to use a single bus to get to Target Field Station. Driving on i94 west of Minneapolis is the worst driving in the state. That will not change by adding more lanes, that section of highway feels like a death trap. We also want to get rid of our car, one of the only things preventing that is visiting Saint Cloud. Please keep the Northstar train but ADD WEEKEND TRIPS so that convent and fast transit is an option to get to Saint Cloud.
Instead of killing Northstar, they should properly complete it as originally planned—connect St Cloud (city pop 70,000; metro pop 200,000). They also should make the schedule more robust. Putting all our transit into cars and roads is silly. Unimodal systems are inherently less dependable—especially when road construction, snow days, and bridge failures happen. Rail adds resiliency to the system. Plus it’s a great way to get to Twins games and the airport.
I depended on North Star light rail services coming from Elk River to my job in Minneapolis for the past 6 years. Removing this service would be a dramatic increase in cost for myself and may force me to work elsewhere not bringing business to Minneapolis and being my pay back to the Elk River community. I understand busses may be another option considered, however as we saw yesterday March 6 all bus route had been canceled while the train could still operate. As experienced with busses in my past they are not nearly as dependable once stranded me in a city with no way home. If this service is actually functioning at the times the riders need and for events not leaving immediately and without political sabotage (looking at you Anoka) this would be a very successful program. Thank you.
We commute along 94 to Plymouth rather than along hwy 10. We do however live very near the Big Lake station and LOVE our experiences the few times we were able to catch the train. We would love to be able to use the train on weekends to get to Anoka shopping and dining without having to drive and park. Especially in the summer when we could ride the train with bikes and/or Rollerblade. I am concerned that Amtrac is able to continue their services but Northstar is not. Where is the transparency in the cost to run calculations? Who or where are the largest costs because I suspect the biggest hurdle here is BNSF rail rental. They run a significant amount of cargo along those rails and are likely "upset" they would have to make space in their schedules to allowe commuter trains to pass along the rails. I think this is big business price gouging in order to push small city services out. It's cliche. They original spirit of this was to provide city services and reduce car traffic and emissions around hwy 10. BNSF needs to make reasonable space for the Northstar to run more regular daily routes on weekends and evenings. If that means running cargo in the middle of the night that's what it is.
