Music ensembles are an essential part of a quality education. They offer community, mental health, teamwork skills, study skills, and creative thinking. Music in strings, band, and choir ensembles, is the reason many kids make it to school! It makes kuds feel connected to something vast, beautiful, and deep.
Music programs gives students a place where they belong. It gives them a voice. For some, it gives them a reason to come to school. Music is the thing that moves life forward. It brings us together. A cut like this would be detrimental.
So many students have grown and thrived in the music program. It is a HUGE passion to thousands of people, and it’s going to negatively impact them with this decision to “save money”. I am pretty sure I wouldn’t have survived without it, as it’s something that brightens up my day from the dread of school.
Music brought me out of my shell and now I am watching my daughter come out of hers. Music has done wonders for her socially, emotionally and academically. I will never understand derstand the attempt to eliminate programs with a plethora of empirical evidence regarding the benefits attached to it. It only targets students which is unfair and certainly not equitable. Although any teacher can teach Music, it will not be the same and definitely not as robust. It's a shame and only hurts students.
I'm a professional sound mixer, my most recent credit is Come From Away in Toronto at the Royal Alexandria Theatre. My grade school music teacher is the person that got me on the path to what would eventually become my career. It's a mistake to take opportunities away from children that allow them explore and learn about music.
In high school, music got me out of my shell. It gave me the self-confidence that I never thought I would have. As a retired teacher, I sing in 3 choirs. The health benefits - physical, mental and social - are beyond description. Young people need the arts so much. As much as the sports programs are very important, so too are the arts. Music gives joy to learning, improves memory, develops mental (and physical) health and even improves mathematical skills. The idea of getting rid of the music program is so very short-sighted. I know that thousands of young people benefit tremendously from the arts programs - not just for the idea of becoming a musician, which is very possible, but just to give them the self-confidence required to succeed. Ask any company that hires new people - they don't just want an academic - they look for well-rounded people who have delved into many fields such as the arts or sports. Please take a look at all the research into the benefits of music before you make a drastic decision.

Please do not cut this program! Music is so important in schools. My son has learned so much and has had so much fun in his music class and performing in concerts for the community. This program and the wonderful music teachers make school enjoyable for the kids.
Our steelpan instructor is so incredible and so special. He's been working with three classes (Grades 6, 7, & 8) at our school every year for over a decade and provides them two opportunities to perform every school year. All students know that when they get to Grade 6, they're going to get to learn steelpan. And they're excited because this incredible instructor gets these kids to sound SO GOOD (and he only meets with each class for 30 minutes a week!)!
Aside from learning the notes and developing a sense for timing and syncopation, he teaches them collaboration, discipline, and perseverance. The idea that our students might lose this, well, it's heartbreaking.
